I’ve done this a few times. I’m sure Glen has done it many many times! This is a tough one for sure. More mentally than anything else. I found that the first time I did it, it was so hard. But after that it seemed to get easier. I’ve added an article about how to not only survive the 5K test but thrive!
A couple of pointers:
figure out your target pace – when do you want to finish? Is your goal 20 minutes, 22, 25, 26, 30? stick to that as much as you can. you can also look at your pace for the 500 m split.
don’t go hard right off the start – find a pace and keep it there. Pick up your pace a bit in the last 1000 metres. The last 300 to 500 metres – sprint!
the first 1000 metres will feel pretty good, around the 3K mark it starts getting tough – but you’re almost there!
Your mind will want to quit, don’t!
